Inside the Dukes County Probate & Family Court
The Dukes County Probate and Family Court is located at 81 Main St., Edgartown. It is easily accessible by Route 1, Route 6, Route 8 and Route 13 on the Vineyard Transit Authority. There is plenty of free parking near the courthouse.
The court is open 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, and handles about 500 probate and family law cases from all of Dukes County, which includes Martha’s Vineyard, Chappaquiddick Island the Elizabeth Islands. Motions are generally heard on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month; pre-trials on Tuesdays and trials on Mondays. Dukes County is the second least-populous county in Massachusetts, with about 16,500 permanent residents, although the population swells during the summer with tourists and seasonal residents. The three islands include seven towns: Aquinnah, Chilmark, Edgartown, Gosnold, Oak Bluffs, Tisbury, and West Tisbury.
